Stella Yetunde Akoma, professionally known as Stella Chin Akoma or Stella Chin, is a Nigerian multifaceted and Gospel recording artist, songwriter, author, scriptwriter, speaker, and Evangelist. Affectionately known as "The Sojourner," she is a voice of faith, hope, and restoration, dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music, literature, and creative storytelling.
A native of Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria, Stella studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, where her passion for storytelling and the performing arts was further refined. Today, she combines her gifts in music, writing, film, and ministry to create works that inspire, encourage, and transform lives across generations and cultures.
As an accomplished creative, Stella Chin is the author of books, a scriptwriter, and a passionate advocate for excellence in African music and media. Her songs and writings reflect themes of faith, worship, perseverance, healing, purpose, and the unfailing love of God.
Stella serves as the President and Executive Director of P-Matrix Global Entertainment, continuing the vision established by its founder, her late husband, Wleypatriot Chibe Akoma. Interviewer: Stella, for people who are just discovering you, who is Stella Chin Akoma?
Stella Chin Akoma: Stella Chin Akoma is a creative, a storyteller and, above everything else, a woman driven by purpose. I am a recording artist, songwriter, author, scriptwriter, filmmaker and speaker. But beyond the titles, I see myself as someone who has been given a voice for a reason. Everything I create—whether music, film, writing or spoken words—is connected to a bigger message of hope, faith, humanity and Africa.
Interviewer: Your music seems to move across different sounds and styles. How would you describe your music?
Stella Chin Akoma: My music doesn't like to be trapped in one box. I explore gospel, inspirational music, Afro-fusion, Afrobeat, Igbo fusion and other sounds that allow me to express different emotions and stories. Sometimes I want to worship, sometimes I want to inspire, sometimes I want people to dance, and sometimes I simply want to tell a story. For me, music is a language, and I want my language to reach beyond borders.
Interviewer: You have released quite a lot of music. What keeps you creating?
Stella Chin Akoma: There is always something inside me that wants to become a song. I don't create simply because I want to have another song out there. I create because I have something to say. Some songs come from faith, some from life experiences, some from pain, and some from hope. I believe that somewhere in the world, someone needs the exact message I am putting into that song.
Interviewer: You often say you want your music to reach the world. What does that mean to you?
Stella Chin Akoma: It means I don't want my music to stop at Nigeria or Africa. I want someone in America, Europe, Asia, Australia or anywhere else to hear a Stella Chin Akoma song and feel something. Music can cross a border without needing a visa. (laughs) If one song can comfort someone, inspire someone to keep going, bring someone closer to God or simply make someone feel less alone, then I have achieved something meaningful.
Interviewer: Your fans have been talking a lot about your versatility. How do you feel about that?
Stella Chin Akoma: I'm grateful. I think people are beginning to understand that I am not just one thing. They see the musician, but there is also the writer, the filmmaker, the storyteller and the woman behind all these creative expressions. When people say, “Stella is different,” I take that as a compliment because I never wanted to become a copy of somebody else. I want to build something that carries my own identity.
Interviewer: Let's talk about your upcoming movie, THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA. What inspired the title?
Stella Chin Akoma: The title itself is a conversation. THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA is about imagining what Africa could become if Africans truly understood the power of unity. We have enormous cultural, human and natural resources, but sometimes our greatest weakness is fragmentation. The film explores the possibility of a stronger, more united Africa and asks important questions about leadership, identity, development, power and the future of our continent.
Interviewer: Is the movie simply entertainment, or is there a deeper message?
Stella Chin Akoma: There is definitely a deeper message. I want people to watch it and be entertained, but I also want them to think. I want a young African watching the film to ask, “What can Africa become, and what role can I play in making that possible?” Cinema has the power to entertain and educate at the same time. That is the kind of storytelling I am interested in.
Interviewer: You are also known by a very powerful name—The Modern Widow. Where did that identity come from?
Stella Chin Akoma: The Modern Widow came from a very personal chapter of my life. Losing my husband changed my world, and becoming a widow was never something I imagined for myself. But I realized that widowhood does not mean the end of a woman's story. A woman can grieve and still dream. She can hurt and still create. She can cry and still stand. She can lose someone she loves and still discover that there is purpose ahead of her.
So The Modern Widow is not simply a title. It represents resilience. It represents a woman who refuses to disappear because life changed.
Interviewer: Many people see strength in you, but what happens behind the scenes?
Stella Chin Akoma: Behind the scenes, I am human. There are moments when I am strong and moments when I am simply trying to get through the day. I have learned that strength doesn't mean you don't cry. Sometimes strength is crying, wiping your face and saying, “I will try again tomorrow.” My journey has taught me that grief and purpose can exist in the same heart.
Interviewer: Has your personal journey influenced your music?
Stella Chin Akoma: Absolutely. Life has changed the way I write. Pain gives you a different understanding of certain words. Loss gives you a different understanding of love. Faith becomes different when you have walked through difficult seasons. Some of the things I sing about today, I couldn't have sung with the same depth years ago because I hadn't lived them yet.
Interviewer: You are also a Seventh-day Adventist. How does your faith influence your creativity?
Stella Chin Akoma: My faith is part of who I am. It influences my values, my perspective and the messages I choose to share. I don't want my faith to be something I only talk about inside a church building. I want it reflected in the way I live, create and treat people. When I write a song of hope or encouragement, there is often a spiritual foundation behind it.
Interviewer: What do you think your fans are responding to most about you?
Stella Chin Akoma: I think they respond to authenticity. People can tell when something is coming from a real place. I'm not trying to present a perfect life. I share the beauty, but I also understand pain. I think people see a woman who is still becoming, still learning, still creating and still moving forward.
Interviewer: Your creative world includes music, books, film and other projects. Why so many different things?
Stella Chin Akoma: Because storytelling has many doors. Sometimes a message wants to become a song. Sometimes it wants to become a film. Sometimes it needs to be written in a book. I don't want to force every idea into one medium. I want to give each story the form that allows it to breathe.
Interviewer: Do you see yourself primarily as a musician or a filmmaker?
Stella Chin Akoma: I see myself as a storyteller. Musician and filmmaker are expressions of that identity. If tomorrow I have a story that needs to become a film, I'll make the film. If another story needs to become music, I'll write the song. The medium may change, but the storyteller remains the same.
Interviewer: What would you say to people who are surprised by how much you have been creating despite everything you've experienced?
Stella Chin Akoma: I would say that sometimes creativity becomes part of your survival. I don't mean that I'm running away from pain. I mean that I have learned to turn some of what I've experienced into something that can speak to somebody else. If my pain can become another person's encouragement, then it doesn't have to be meaningless.
Interviewer: There seems to be a growing conversation around your name. What do you think people are saying about Stella Chin Akoma?
Stella Chin Akoma: (smiles) I hear different things. Some people talk about the number of songs I'm releasing. Some talk about my writing and filmmaking. Some are curious about The Modern Widow. Some say they are surprised by my energy and the number of creative projects I'm pursuing. But honestly, I'm less interested in being talked about and more interested in giving people something worth talking about.
Interviewer: That's an interesting distinction. So what do you want people to remember about your work?
Stella Chin Akoma: I want them to remember the message. I want someone to hear my music years from now and say, “This song helped me.” I want someone to watch my film and say, “This made me think differently about Africa.” I want someone who has experienced loss to see my journey and realize that their story isn't over. If my work can leave that kind of footprint, then I will be fulfilled.
Interviewer: What is one thing people may misunderstand about you?
Stella Chin Akoma: People may see the confidence and assume everything comes easily to me. It doesn't. There is a lot of work, discipline, disappointment, prayer and persistence behind what people see publicly. I am still figuring things out. I'm simply committed to continuing the journey.
Interviewer: What can audiences expect next from Stella Chin Akoma?
Stella Chin Akoma: Expect more music, more storytelling and more films. THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA is an important project for me, and I believe it is the beginning of another chapter in my filmmaking journey. I also have music that I want to take to a much wider audience. I'm building, and I'm not finished yet.
Interviewer: Finally, if Stella Chin Akoma could speak directly to everyone listening around the world, what would she say?
Stella Chin Akoma: I would say: Don't allow your circumstances to convince you that your story is over. Life can change suddenly. You can lose things you never imagined losing. You can walk through seasons that break your heart. But as long as there is still breath in you, there is still something you can create, something you can become and someone you can inspire.
My name is Stella Chin Akoma. I am a musician, a storyteller, a filmmaker, a woman of faith, and yes, The Modern Widow. I am still walking, still creating, still believing—and I want my work to remind the world that even after the darkest chapter, there can still be another story to tell.
